USB wiped

Hello all my USB has been wiped - I don't know how. Last time I looked at it it was full.
I plugged it in yesterday and there is NOTHING on there. My friend recommended this programme and I want to recover what was on it - but I can;t work out how to do it? Can someone give me guidance - I'm not very techy so any help would be appreciated.
