TestDisk log shows files recovered, but nothing on new drive

#1 Post by worker17 »

I am recovering data from a failed server, with about 250 Gig of data. TestDisk has now been running for over 2 weeks, through a USB attached external drive. Resource monitor shows that TestDisk is processing at about 5 - 6 MB per second so I expected it to be completed after about 13 hours!

I look at the log generated, and it lists files I am trying to recover. I look at the destination drive and only about 1/3 of the files in the log are there!

What should I do at this point? If I abort the run now, will the files "appear" or does the abort prevent an update to the drive directory structure?

You should clone the damaged disk to a new empty one using ddrescue.
See https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf for details
Once it's done, remove the original disk and try to recover your data from the clone.
