BSoD immediately after run TestDisk

#1 Post by KIPPIE408 »

Symptom: BSoD is shown immediately after run TestDisk, as shown in the title.

Conditions:
Windows 10 version 1703, build 15063.447, 64-bit.
* Checked from winver. Upgraded from Windows 8.1.
TestDisk 7.0 or 7.1-WIP (occurs on both versions).
3.5-inch SATA hard disk to make restored ("Disk A") connected to a SATA port on motherboard directly.
* If Disk A is connected via SATA-to-USB 2.0 connector, no BSoD is shown. But for nine out of ten, deeper search fails because a short disconnection/reconnection comes out.

Log & Messages: BSoD says SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED, and that failure was from ntfs.sys.

You can try to boot from a Linux LiveUSB, see https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf and run TestDisk to check if you have the same problem.
If it's an hardware problem, contacting a data recovery company may be the only solution to recover your data...
