I found old files from partition but want to just copy them to save hdd?

#1 Post by thepirate »

So I ran the whole analyze and it found all of my files! So happy. This is on a 2nd hdd where the power went out while moving a partition on it.
So I found the files and now it says " Please select a destination where / and any files below will be copied. I previously selected all files, but now its only showing me the directory C: \ , which is my main 1tb hdd and not larger enough to hold the 2 tb of data that was stored on my 2nd hdd that is 4tb. So I just want to copy the found files back to the same hdd they were recovered from. How do I choose the original 2nd hdd and not my C: \ ?

Thank you!

Use the left arrow key to have a list of drives.
If it doesn't work, move testdisk directory to your D: and start it from here.

ok thanks for reply. before i saw it though, i realized my partition was unformatted. and that is why it was not showing up. so i chose to format and label it a letter. i guess this happened because of the power outage while the partition was being moving around. and after i formatted the drive, i had to run the analyze again. but then it showed the drive being available to be selected on TestDisk.
so now i am "copying" the files that were found to the original drive in which they were located before. is this a bad idea? because it may write over the raw data it is trying to copy over? since it is the same drive? so far it seems to be working well.

i dont have another large enough drive to move the data to.

It was a bad idea to format the partition. It's also a bad idea to copy the files from and to the same filesystem.
Instead you should copy the files on another disk and when it's done, you can copy the files back to the original disk.

Sadly i do not have another drive that is large enough to hold the information being recovered.
Any chance this might work out? or is it pretty much not going to work when copying these files to the same filesystem?

The HDD is fine, its just that i lost the data during a power outage while moving a partition around.
