Recovering a lost partition

#1 Post by Silverstone0212 »

Hello. I have a problem.
I made the rookie mistake of waiting until the last minute to back up my stuff from my 1TB external hard drive, which had recently started to act up.
Earlier, I used PhotoRec to try to recover my files from the "missing" partition, but it rewrote the file names as the program picks it up and it took a bit longer than I originally thought.
So, I thought of using TestDisk to do a "Quick" and "Deeper" scan for the partition, but the "Quick" scan did not find anything and the "Deeper" scan also took longer than I originally thought (and usually I am a patient person); the scan originally ran for about 3 days and it was still at 0%.
I am currently making a disk image that has been running for about 4 days now and it's almost at 6%, which is not as time consuming as the scans. I believe I had about 200GB on that hard drive. I really need to get some stuff off of that hard drive.
In case I need to reboot my computer, run a quick reboot that requires a reboot or try something else, is there a way to save my current progress and get back to it?

P.S. I have been getting a list of errors all over the place.
Errors:
  • ReadFile Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
  • ReadFile The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
  • ReadFile The device is not ready.
  • ReadFile The semaphore timeout period has expired.

Your HDD is physically damaged. You can try to clone it to a new empty disk using ddrescue as described in https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf
Once it's done, remove the original disk and try to access your data from the clone.
If it doesn't work, contact a data recovery company.
Good luck
