While trying a certain Windows tool my external HD changed from NTFS to FAT32, deleting all my files in the process. How do I get my files back, considering the NTFS partition with everything I had was "deleted"? Do I need to change my HD back to NTFS first and them recover the files the usual way?
Thanks a lot!

Try to recover the NTFS partition using testdisk.
See https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf chapter "Recovering deleted partition using TestDisk"
