formatted a partition

#1 Post by bcsystems »

After someone accidentally formatted a partition, we used Photorec to recover "files" onto a secondary drive.
I've sucessfully used Testdisk to recover deleted partitions before, but this partition was formatted. No files show up, should the "deeper" option show files in subfolders? Or are we stuck with the randomised file names. I'm aware of the method of rebuilding names from mp3 tags or Photo meta data, was just hoping for a shorter path than that.
Reading the manual has left me not finding what I'm looking for.

PhotoRec will not recover the original filenames and TestDisk undelete feature will not work for reformated partition.
You can try other data recovery utilities but check the recovered files before discarding what you have recovered using PhotoRec, I have seen good filenames but bad file content several times...
