I need to recover a partition on an a 4TB external HDD. What happened is, I was using fedora media writer and it detected my external HDD as a thumb drive for some reason. I would never think that would happen so at the drop down menu in the media writer I failed to change detected drives and my external was selected by default. I proceeded to write the OS image before I realized It actually had my external HDD selected and not my thumb drive. I canceled immediately, but it was too late and now I am missing the 4TB partition and all data

I am trying to use testdisk to recover the partition but have never used it before. Testdisk detected partition as "None" so I went with that. I didn't see my old 4TB partition and it started doing some kind of analysis that was taking a very long time but it stalled at 9%. I have no clue what any of this below really means.

Use EFI GPT intsead of partition type none. What was the type of your lost partition ?
