Help with partition table perhaps?

#1 Post by JonnyTestdisk » 20 May 2018, 21:05

Hello, great tool, thank you so much for providing this for free for the community.

I have a terabyte that i cant access from windows, but linux i can access/read/write to. Main problem, i dont have anywhere to back this data up to. Its the only terabyte i got (almost full), and none of my laptops or desktops have that much free space, and i dont have money to buy another terabyte. I was hoping it was possible for you to help me fix it, i would be forever greatful.

Its FAT32, and i did what i could in testdisk, got the log file, will add. It keeps saying 'cant recover partition', its also keeps showing it as a HFS+ partition, and while i bought this HDD from a place that sells refurbished electronics, ive never had an HFS+ partition.

Im hoping with my log file you can tell me some magic like 'set geometry to such such' and it gets fixed. Again i dont really have the option to now xfer the data and just reformat, otherwise i would. If you can tell for sure my drive is failing, that would be good info too, not sure if that info is hidden in the testdisk logfile or not.
Also you can consider me a noob, ive always fixed my own computers but things definitely go over my head.

Thanks for you help!!

The safer solution is really to copy the files using testdisk to another disk.
You can try to fix the filesystem using chkdsk, read https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf chapter "Repairing filesystem".

Yea i was gonna mention it in my next post that chkdsk in windows fails to run on this drive (have done it before with other drives). Windows doesnt recognize any partition at all. Under 'properties' in windows it shows '0mb out of 0mb' used, and it keeps asking me to format. I try to do chkdsk in the terminal and in the gui, both say 'cant run chkdsk on unpartitioned drive, would you like to format?'

In the device manager area, it lists the partition as RAW.
I ran the gparted version of chkdsk, it gives all green check marks, but theres some things in that gparted log thay may mean something, idk, got no errors, still didnt work afterward.

I realize there may be no easy fix, ive done some research and have found no solutions, except to run testdisk if chkdsk fails. But i cant get testdisk to fix it either (i did the general steps of 'analyse, fast search, deep search'. Of course i would assume 'bad drive', but somehow linux can read/write no problem, sees the partition, mounts it, etc.. And no 'bad drive' symptoms leading up to this.

But just maybe with this logfile you may see something, i certainly am not good enough to decipher the log file. I would humbly ask if you can have a glance at it with your expert eyes.
Thanks

does this logfile above give any clues as to the problem? or if its fixable?

The log file lists CRC error. It's not fixable. You should copy your data to a new disk and discard this damaged disk.
Sorry

Sorry for delay, school and work 7 days a week, plus a kid.
Thanks so much for the info. At least i know for sure and wont waste hours upon hours trying to fix it with other tools. One time i thought my internal disk was fried and it was just a bad superblock, i ended up using an older superblock and fixed it.

But if you say CRC is not fixable, then i'll start saving up for a new terabyte.

A question or 3, if i wipe, and reformat, is it semi-safe to use this drive again? not for important stuff, but maybe as a 3rd backup or sheerly for convenience of moving data around? Also, when i format the drive, is there something i can do to extend the life? ive heard of zeroing out the entire drive, and then somehow having it move bad sectors to the end of the disk BEFORE i start putting data on it. Not sure if zeroing out the drive has anything to do with that, or how to even do that (should it be formatted first? what tools to use, etc). Is a CRC error fixable at all with formating? How can i still get the longest life out of this disk, while not keeping critical data on it? How safe is it if i do 'fix' it after formating?

Thanks for any info about this sir.
