OS X Partition Overwritten by OpenBSD without confirm testdisk says can't recover

#1 Post by vssdeo »

Hi.

Here are the steps to my blunder on OS X High Sierra, Mac Book Air late 2015, 128 GB SSD Hard Disk. Since I am on road and away from my desk any help would be great.

The last structure was (What I remember) The partition is standard with what a new Mac Book Air comes with for 128 GB SSD except for a 8 GB partition I had done later with diskutility app which comes with OS X.

1. EFI
2. OS X HFS 113 GB
3. ext4 8GB

I was trying to install OpenBSD or rather check. As soon as I selected the main disk by mistake (I didn't even commit a write), I just exited the install program. Only later I realized that the partition had been over written with
1. EFI
2. OPEN BSD

So NO format was done, nor any partition table committed hence I have a little hope on recovery. On using testdisk I see the message below, So I don't know how to proceed. The HDF also shown as D^D.

"The following partitions can't be recovered:
Mac HFS 178007028 2401529849 2223522822 [D]
HFS blocksize=67108864, 1138 GB / 1060 GiB
Mac HFS 236978132 238247667 1269536
HFS+ blocksize=4096, 650 MB / 619 MiB"

Hint for advanced users. dmsetup may be used if you prefer to avoid to rewrite the partition table for the moment:
echo "0 409600 linear /dev/sda 40" | dmsetup create test0
echo "0 409600 linear /dev/sda 46" | dmsetup create test1
echo "0 14093320 linear /dev/sda 222622670" | dmsetup create test2
echo "0 14093320 linear /dev/sda 222622672" | dmsetup create test3
echo "0 1269536 linear /dev/sda 235708600" | dmsetup create test4

interface_write()

No partition found or selected for recovery
simulate write!

TestDisk exited normally.

Re: OS X Partition Overwritten by OpenBSD without confirm testdisk says can't recover

#2 Post by cgrenier »

The mainsuperblock of the HFS+ filesystem has probably been overwritten.
If the HFS+ partition was just after the EFI partition. We will have
EFI System 40 409639 409600 [EFI]
FAT32, blocksize=512, 209 MB / 200 MiB

Mac HFS 409640 2223932461 2223522822 [D]
HFS blocksize=67108864, 1138 GB / 1060 GiB

MS Data 222622672 236715991 14093320
ext4 blocksize=4096 Large_file Sparse_SB, 7215 MB / 6881 MiB

But the HFS+ and the ext4 filesystem will overlaps! So I don't know the exact location and size of the HFS+ partition.
You can always use PhotoRec to recover your data without the original filenames but try other data recovery utility, you may have better results.

Thank you so much for your time and reply, I just have a follow up question: The ext4 partition does not matter to me as it was empty. Is it possible to specify a partition table overwrite where after standard EFI, the rest till the end of disk is considered part of HFS+.
