partition found but can't be recovered

Hi all:

I will try to explain as good as I can... from de beginning. Let's start.

I had an 1TB hard drive with 2 partitions: the system partition (C:) and the data partition (D:). On C partition I had a Windows 10 Pro installed. I cloned C: into a new SSD drive (everything ok). Then I had a C: partition and a D: partition. I deleted C partition, because my intention was to enlarge D partition (to be 1TB, in other words, to occupy the full hard drive). Here I made a mistake:

I boot using SSD drive, so I had one drive (SSD with the system partition, running ok), and the 2nd drive, that was a free space + data partition ("old" D partition). My intention was, as I said, to enlarge D partition. I run the disk administration on Windows, and I used the option "extend volume". It worked, but I saw something strange: a D partition (extended) and another D partition (the "old" D partition). I misunderstood what was happening, because I thought than I should have just one D partition (not an old D partition and an additional D partition, that was, in fact, the old C partition). Result: I deleted accidentally D partition... it contained all my videos, photos, acreditations, projects... EVERYTHING. My wife is really angry with me, so I have lost my weeding photos...

What have I proved?

I have used (many times) TestDisk. It has found old C partition (I have restored it), and it also founds D partition, but I get this error (extracted from my log):

Code: Select all

HPFS - NTFS 15820 167 28 137421 95 18 1953515520 [Dades]

recover_EXT2: s_blocksize=4096

Then, the program says than I can't recover this partition:

I wold like to recover this one called "Dades"... I don't know what can I do... it is impossible to recover? I just want to try all possible options.

Thanks to everybody.

On next screen does TestDisk lists another Dades partition ? If it's the case, recover it ;-)
If not, you can use TestDisk, Geometry, set the number of cylinders to 137422, TestDisk will not complain about the Dades partition starting at cylinder 15820. Try to list and copy its files.
In the worst case, it's always possible to use PhotoRec to recover your data.

This has worked! I'm really happy about this software! I will recommend your soft to everybody. No doubt about how strong are your skills.

Thank you so so much!!!

Hello,
i seem to have a similar problem. I have one broken NTFS partition that was accidentally formated as HFS, but the files are still there I can see them with other data recovery software it's just that i cannot seem to recover the partition. I'm not sure what I should do in geometry, can you explain ?
From the picture i understand that the partition (it's 117GB) is seen thrice instead of just once. (Windows8.1 sees it as raw)

You have to choose which partitions to keep/recover. Use the arrow keys to switch to P(rimary) the partitions you want.

Ok, but what about the geometry problem?
