Further thoughts ...
I continued using my linux system for a few hours with no issues; sda and sdc were both intact and usable.
I then rebooted to Windows to play a game for about an hour. No issues there.
When I rebooted back to Linux, it was no longer able to complete startup.
sda is still bootable, Linux Mint startup begins, but can not complete.

(a) Can you physically unplug sdb SSD (Windows 10) and try to boot up with sda (Linux Mint)

(b) In another forum thread (similar symptoms of Windows 10 update screwing Linux) I suggested .. google search this pattern ..

My idea now is that there are so may threads on disk crashes (not just in this forum) that it might warrant development of a script or bot to automate the forensic detective work.
