Old SATA 80Gb HD

#1 Post by lcfiorini »

Hello everybody,

This week I decided to revisit an old stored laptop in my house and Windows failed to boot with the screen below

https://miro.medium.com/max/700/1*RmCHI ... EZbPA.jpeg

Any chosen option rebooted the system again in an ever unbootable cycle. Next I Googled the problem and tried to execute chkdsk /f /r after booting with command prompt and saw the message below

CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. CHKDSK may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume <Y/N>

The disk could have something important I didn't remember. But just in case I chose not to dismount this 80 Gb HDD and transferred it to a docking station to see more details. To my complete surprise Windows Disk Management and Windows Explorer both saw it normally as if it didn't have any problem at all according to the attached picture. I then copied all of its contents in order to rescue any files possibly important to me.
Next I ran TestDisk and it looked like an ordinary healthy disk too. Just in case I ran the "Rebuild BS" command in an attempt to rescue this unknown Windows installation. Despite not knowing which Windows version was installed, I can assure it was Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 because of the laptop manufacture date.

Next I transferred back this HDD to its original source (the old stored laptop) and tried to boot Windows again unsuccessfully. I ran chkdsk again to see the same message cited above

CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. CHKDSK may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume <Y/N>

Now, with all my files backed up, I answered YES to the dismount volume option. Now this disk is no longer readable in its original machine nor in my docking station and I don't know what else coulde be done.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Your drive has 214 unreadable sectors that were already remapped due to write commands to them.
Another 322 are unreadable:

1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate POSR-- 199 199 051 - 9829
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct PO--CK 173 173 140 - 214
187 Reported_Uncorrect -O--CK 085 001 000 - 10008
196 Reallocated_Event_Count -O--CK 056 056 000 - 144
197 Current_Pending_Sector -O--C- 176 176 000 - 322

Your drive is dammaged.
Duplicate your drive using ddrescue as described in the manual.
