I mistakenly disassembled the volume

#1 Post by PEPO87 »

Good morning,

I am sorry to have to ask you and not be able to proceed alone, but my knowledge on the subject is few and I would not want to risk losing my fate completely.

I had a nas qnap in raid1, instead of unmounting the disks I unmounted the volumes (distracted).

test disk brings me the following report:

TestDisk 7.2-WIP, Data Recovery Utility, March 2021 Christophe GRENIER <grenier@cgsecurity.org> https://www.cgsecurity.org Disk /dev/sdb - 2000 GB / 1863 GiB - CHS 243201 255 63 Partition Start End Size in sectors >D Linux filesys. data 40 1060135 1060096

the files are readable and I'm trying to recover them with the "P" and "C" function, but after more than 24 hours of operation it only copied 400gb to 1.5tb: S

is it possible to recover ONLY the volume [datavol1]? all the data are present there

tomorrow I have to continue working and without data it is dramatic, I wish I could have a read-only volume to at least be able to copy the data I need if necessary.

Thanks for reading.

As you have to select a partition/volume before listing and copying files you are automatically restricted to that volume. Therefore I don't understand the question.

forgive me, I expressed myself badly, I absolutely do not want an urgent answer. I motivated only the two paths taken:

1) with the 1st hd I am making a data backup. and I don't need help with that

2) with the 2nd hd I would like to recover the volume and access it from an os such as linux qnap mac osx ... but I don't know how to do it, I assume that it is enough to set the volume to "P" and proceed with the execution. but I don't want
to lose the data (2n hd), so before making any other mistakes I would like to have a confirmation from you.

forgive me if I have expressed myself badly

If you want to play with the second hard disk, duplicate it and play with it.
You are acting as if your RAID1 contains two identical REGULAR drives.

I can't tell for sure as I don't use RAID arrays, but there might a kind of RAID header that contains information that this drive is supposed to be a RAID drive and there my be data to identify the other drives belonging to this RAID array.

Therefore it might be impossible to remove one RAID drive out of its set and run it separately. For other RAID configurations, such as RAID 5 this is obvious but as I said: I don't know. I am not aware of any general rule of the on drive layout of RAID configurations. They might be different between software RAIDs, hardware RAIDs and between different hardware RAID controller manufacturers.

exactly, in nas qnap there was 2hd in raid1.

the volume [datavol1] identified by testdisk contains all the data, I don't want to restore the old raid.

my goal would be to make that hd accessible only for the volume datavol1 (which contains all the data I want to recover) without compromising the other identified volumes. insert the 2nd hd in a usb 3.0 box connect it to a qnap external usb port and use it in read-only mode. is it possible to do this with testdisk?
