Please Help; Synology DS410 non raided drive failure!
Posted: 05 Sep 2012, 11:22
Hey Guy and Girls,
I was hoping someone might be able to help me. I'm not a whiz when it comes to IT, I can get around stuff generally but please assume ignorance on my behalf and appologies in advance if I ask any stupid questions or don't understand your answers...Cheers!
Basically I have a synology DS410 running 4 drives 3 Raid 1 not. (don't ask why I did that!) After a bout of power failures the single drive died. In Disk Management the drive seems to be split in to 4 sectors, 3 healthy partitions: 2.38GB, 2.00GB and 1392.76GB and one Unallocated sector 128MB. I'm assuming that the synology software creates these partitions, with the exception of the Unallocated sector which I'm guessing is where my problems lies! This drive is not available in 'My Computer as no drive letter can be assigned.
I have created a disk image of the drive on to a seperate 2TB drive and have recovered the files from the drive using Active@FileRecovery however the 'Meta' data for all the files are screwed; having 40GB of photos and 40GB of music with the wrong names and dates is a real pain.
So I have tried to use TestDisk but I think my lack of understanding, regardless of how much I read, seems to be kicking in. I've added the Log file for you to have a gander at. As i'm sure you will see the LBA and CHS don't seem to match. Is it the case that this drive uses the LBA system over CHS which is why they don't match? I have a second samsung HD153WI which is working fine and it has the same LBA CHS issues. The LBA size is denoted on the drive at 2,930,277,168. No CHS is mentioned on the drive itself and I've had no luck finding it online or converting the LBA to CHS using online tools!
Any how I'm kind of stuck at what to do after I've analysed the disk. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Sam
P.S I just noticed that the log below is after i have ajusted the geometry of the drive to 255 heads rather than 240 (I was just testing stuff blindly) I'll running another analysis now as default for you. Cheers.
