Filesystem seems damaged. 1TB drive

#1 Post by Geordie »

Hello!

I have a Problem. Upon switching off my hardddrive (in an external case - Sharkoon) from my settopbox and switching it back on on my PC (same external case) it was not recognized by my PC anymore. I was prompted to format the drive - which I of course did not do. I used TestDisks Step by step Tutorial but I got the message "Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged. I also want to point out that label of the drive should not be F4 2TB but something like F2 1000GB. The former label was the last drive which I had inserted in my external case before I put in the now defunct drive. At the time Auslogic DiskDefrag was running and it was listing the F4 2TB drive and did not switch to the F2 1000GB. I added the three screenshots and the log file. The harddisk is a Samsung HD103SI 1TB disk.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Sincerely, Alex S.

F4 2TB as label looks strange?
Doesn't match somehow?
Can you have a try to diagnose your boot sector?
Start TestDisk.
Confirm through until you see the menu Analyse.
Don't confirm at Analyse but Advanced.
Confirm at Boot with enter also.
Highlight Rebuild BS and hit Enter.
Rebuild your BS will be in progress.
Normally, it takes some minutes.
If it's finished, please post the infos or upload a screen.
If you see a menu List, please highlight it and press enter.
Please let me know, do you see your data or an error message.
To get back to the previous screen, easily press q for Quit.

Infos will follow.

Until yet don't use write or repair NTFS. It's always better not to change anything, if you're not sure.

Thank you for the quick answer. I've added a screenshot of the result. What I am worried about is that TestDisk seems to think that the disk size is 2TB or am I misinterpreting the "1953520002" value? Could it be that the MBR or something else was transfered from my 2TB disk to my 1TB disk and that is the result that the drive is not accessible anymore?

Thanks for any additional help!
Sincerelly,
Alex S.

1953520002 is the total amount of sectors.
You can watch the size of your partition at the bottom of the screen.
The boot sector displayes it.
Example;
* HPFS - NTFS 0 1 1 121600 254 63 1953520002 [F4 2TB]
NTFS, 1000 GB / 931 GiB
Please test the menu Advanced / Undelete.
Might be possible that you see your data and you can copy them to another intact disk or partition.
Otherwise you'll need datarecovery software.

The only message I get is "Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged." It is the same if I choose 'List' or 'Undelete'.
In 'Boot' 'Repair MFT' I get the message "MFT and MFT Mirror are bad. Failed to repair them."

Should I create an image with 'Image Creation' before I try anyting else?

Might PhotoRec be able to recreate any data?

Thanks,
Alex S.

PhotoRec woud be able to recover data.
But it doesn't keep file names nor directories.

TestDisk Image Creation only creates an image to work with.
If you want to restore it, you probably have to use dd from a Linux LiveCD.
Some information about working with images;

What happens if PhotoRec finds more than one file with the same name? Does it rename the file to someting like _0001.extension or is there an error message displayed? There were/are a lot of files with the same name on the drive.

Would a communication in german be easier?

Thanks,
Alex S.

Names created by PhotoRec look like this;
f14040728
PhotoRec renames each file.
So you wouldn't get any error message.
Please use TestDisk 6.14.
Infos;
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Currently I see no reason to change languages.
It would be necessary to create another thread and it makes this one obsolete.

I've had a look for another copy of a FAT32-partition in your testdisk.log-file, but I didn't get any clue
Like in this example;
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Data_Rec ... to_recover

The drive is formatted as NTFS. It was partitoned under Windows XP. I tried 6.14 but got the same results. Logfile attached.

Thanks,

Re: Filesystem seems damaged. 1TB drive

#10 Post by Geordie »

PhotoRec did manage to reconstruct nearly all of my data on the disk - but it mixed up several .mpg files. A lot of them have beginning, middle and/or endings of different files. Also it has merged and split up a lot of files. So if there is another way or chance to repair the drive any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Alex S.
