Newbie Question

Am I going about this the right way?

I have a 500 Gig 2.5 inch drive which was subjected to a mechanical shock. I've run photorec, and after a few days, recovered several thousand files, but it was going to take about eighty days to work its way through the whole disk.

I've aborted the operation and I'm now running testdisk, doing an Analyse cylinder run, which has got another twent four hours to go.

I've tried to find a backup FAT, but it looks like its gone. Windows 8 sees the drive but prompts me to format it, and stops responding if I click on it.

Thanks in anticipation.

Pete

Did you have a headcreash?
If you have bad sectors or read errors, datarecovery software might hang.
Also you can check your disk using crystal disk info:

If you have bad sectors and photorec or testdisk hangs, you should clone your disk first.

Thank you Fiona.

Sorry for the slow response, I've had a rather busy few days.

I think it was a head crash that caused the problem. I did try to clone the drive using Easeuse disk copy but got error message after a while.

Teskdisk did eventually complete and I had some success recovering files, but several folders yielded nothing.

I'll try crystal disk info, and different disk cloning software. Any suggestions please?
