Dead SD Card?

#1 Post by jpt000 »

Hi,
I was trying to repair a 64Gb Samsung microSD with testdisk. It got corrupted by android (partition turned from exFAT to RAW). I'm not really sure what I have done that it now shows as 273.65Gb and I can't format, repair, anything.
Right now in Testdisk, if I analyse I get Partition sector doesn't have the endmark 0xAA55. No partitions are found. Also, seems the geometry is wrong, hence the size mismatch.
Any clues?

Unfortunately testdisk doesn't support exFAT boot sector repair.
Only writing the partition into the partition table.
TestDisk is often able to list files from a corrupted file system.
If you can list your files, you can copy them to another healhy disk or partition.
Otherwise you'll need datarecovery software like PhotoRec.

There are something to watch recovering exFAT partitions.
The partition type is 07, it means it's an NTFS partition.
But the boot sector and file system (formatted) is exFAT.
In TestDisk, at the bottom of the screen you can watch the type of your boot sector.

Right now I don't care much about the data, I am just wondering how to get the card to work again - I just don't seem to manage to get the geometry to be recognised by any program (gparted, minitool, testdisk...). I can change it manually in testdisk, but can't find any partitions, or create new ones.

Maybe you could give sd formatter a try:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
Go to Option and enable "Format Size Adjustment".

Tried it, but didn't work.
As the card was new, I sent it back. Thanks for your suggestions anyway.
