Broken NTFS partition (unusual media descriptor)

Hi all,

After changing my Mac IOS partition, my windows partition went sour.

I think the Windows partition overlap with free space. The windows partition has some important files hope not to lose. So hopefully I can repair the parition to it's old structure.

See attached pictures for some info. Do you think the partition can be restored back to life? Or focus on datarecovery?

Hi Fiona,

Retry, see attachment for the pictures!

Testdisk sees the partition, says the MBR is ok, but can't open filesystem, filesystem seems damaged.

Update: for some reason the upload attachment isn't working from my macbook.. Let me try to upload the files through wetransfer...

I've aleady got some info from another user that picture upload might cause trouble?

Your disk has unusual size of 251 GB.
Is your disk size Ok?
Your windows partition probably ends after disk limit.
That's why your MS Data partition is listed as not recoverable.

Hi Fiona,

The disk works fine, it's just that the partition table seems messed up.

From what I see it looks like the 'empty' partition overlaps the 'real' windows partition. This is the info from partition inspector:

*** Report for internal hard disk ***

Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)
2 409640 202789351 Mac OS X HFS+
3 202789352 204058887 Mac OS X Boot
4 287111168 490233855 Basic Data

Current MBR partition table:
# A Start LBA End LBA Type
1 409640 202789351 af Mac OS X HFS+
2 202789352 204058887 af Mac OS X HFS+
3 * 287111168 490233855 07 NTFS/HPFS

MBR contents:
Boot Code: Unknown, but bootable

Partition at LBA 40:
Boot Code: None (Non-system disk message)
File System: FAT32
Listed in GPT as partition 1, type EFI System (FAT)

Partition at LBA 409640:
Boot Code: None
File System: HFS Extended (HFS+)
Listed in GPT as partition 2, type Mac OS X HFS+
Listed in MBR as partition 1, type af Mac OS X HFS+

Partition at LBA 202789352:
Boot Code: None
File System: HFS Extended (HFS+)
Listed in GPT as partition 3, type Mac OS X Boot
Listed in MBR as partition 2, type af Mac OS X HFS+

Partition at LBA 287111168:
Boot Code: Windows BOOTMGR (Vista)
File System: NTFS
Listed in GPT as partition 4, type Basic Data
Listed in MBR as partition 3, type 07 NTFS/HPFS, active

Any idea?
