WD My Passport corrupted partition and files.

#1 Post by Mist »

System:
Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64-bit 2.6.13 Linux Kernel 3.13.0-37 generic Processor AMD A8-5500 APU with Radeon HD Graphics x 2 Memory 7.7 GiB Hard Drives 450.2 GB Graphics Card AMD Seymour (Radeon HD 6400M/7400 M series VGA controller).
WD My Passport 2 TByte formatted with GParted for Linux as a single partition after removing WD's material since the single purpose was for storage.

What happened:

Tried to retrieve (copy) a file to the main drive but while a filename was present there was nothing behind it (no file). I tried again with another file with the same result. I opened as many directories as I could until the system froze. Except for maybe 4 directories the result was the same. Restarted the system and the external drive. Managed to copy a few more until it froze again. Restarted.

I read Gparted's help file which led me to TestDisk. Ran it and saved the attached log file.

Problem:

Apparently one of the problems is the Backup drive has corrupted files and directories. 45% into the TestDrive run about cylinger 103,000 out of 243,196 showed the following message:

Check_FAT: can't read FAT boot sector.
Invalid FAT BOOT sector.

0 D FAT32 257577 183 38 296757 80 52 629420222
FAT32 257577 183 38 296757 80 52 629420222

Finished:

The harddisk (2000GB / 1862 GiB) seems too small (<2440 GB /2273 GiB)
Check the harddisk size: HD jumpers settings, BIOS detection.
The following partitions can't be recovered.
> FAT32 257577183 38 296757 88 52 629428226
Continue: 322GB / 300GiB

At which time I had a finger-mouse spasm which ended the operation. :x

Question:

If this external drive was partitioned for Linux as a single storage repository, why does it have a FAT32 partition?

Thanks, all.
