Primary hard drive filled up while running testdisk

I ran test disk, but recovery did not work. My hard drive went from 30% to 100% used during the process. Every time I deleted files to make more space, the space was consumed. I would like to recover the space used by test disk. How can I do that? Thanks and regards...joe
