win 10 won't boot

...Friend's Windows 10 won't boot... Said they were on pinterest and it crashed? They're pretty dumb about computers. Maybe I am too...

I may have messed it up with testdisk. I tried stuff that I didn't understand.

I've been working on a 1000 GB disk. I did a million partition table writes to its five partitions. Unfortunately, I just used [ Create ] logging and only have two or three logs.

I think the first time I ran testDisk it suggested partition type [None ], and I selected [Intel ].

Now it suggests [EFI GPT ], and when I select that and [Analyse ] > [Quick Search], it doesn't seem to complete.

Selecting [Intel ] > {Analyse ] > [Quick Search] completes.

I tried making each of the five partitions "*=Primary bootable" and the remaining P=Primary, except one which only accepted D=Deleted. None of these resulted in a boot. One or two of them give my the Cyberlink Recovery something and suggest backing up files.

I can see Users and Documents and stuff, so I'ma back that stuff up now.

Booting to a Windows 10 install disk > Troubleshoot doesn't work. I received various errors... I tried all the troubleshoots after each partition table write.

Repair or backup/format ?

Set the partition 2 as *(bootable) with testdisk or as active with windows disk manager.
Once it's done, try again to fix the boot. Read https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf Chapter "How to make the system bootable again", "Windows Vista/Windows 7/..."

Thanks a lot.

Here's what I did:

1. I marked the 2095104-sector partition D, the [SYSYEM] partition * and the rest P.

2. Exited testdisk...

3. Changed to c:\, I think

4. typed bootrec.exe /fixmbr

It said operation completed successfully, I think.

5. Looked for boot.ini on the root of all the drives I could find.

Couldn't find it.

6. Typed bootrec.exe /fixboot

It said operation completed successfully, I think.

7. exited command prompt.

8. "Continue" in recovery console, I think.

Get blue screen (not ascii) saying:

"Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
Error code: 0xc000000f

You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.

Press ESc for UEFI Firmware Settings"

Thanks again.

I used "Append" on the new testdisk.log. Sorry?

Hi.

I have a HP ENVY 23-d027c with windows 10 upgrade...
They used windows 10 for a while without problems.

Since my last post, I tried the following with no joy:

All Troubleshooting in Windows Recovery Media
Removed hdd and put in my computer
Scanned entire? hdd with Kaspersky, Avast, Malware Bytes, Trinity Rescue Kit
(It found some infected stuff and some decompression bombs)
sfc /scannow
bcdboot.exe c:\windows
https://neosmart.net/wiki/fix-uefi-boot/

Um, I'm currently getting the same error:

"Your PC/Device needs to be repaired
The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD
Error code: 0xc000000f

You'll need to use recovery tools. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.

Press ESc for UEFI Firmware Settings"

I guess my question is, when I go:

testdisk >
Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive0 - 1000 GB / 931 GiB >
[EFI GPT] (detected) >
[ Analyse ] >
[Quick Search] >

why don't I get "*" ?...
I only can select "P" or "D".

Is it ok to have a partition listed before my [SYSTEM] partition?

Any advice?
thx.
