I was fooling around in disk utility and accidentally formatted over my only source of data. I'm new to data recovery but have other computer knowledge. Could anyone give me some pointers?

If you have formte your HFS+ partition by another HFS+ partition, use PhotoRec to recover your data.
Read https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf on how to use PhotoRec and sort recovered files.
