WD My Passport failed

#1 Post by betasweater »

Okay, so I've got a 2TB WD My Passport which is just about 3 years old and it appears to have lost the filesystem. I'm currently on a Mac and I think it was unplugged rather carelessly. Needless to say, the next time it was plugged in it asked to be "initialized" and unfortunately that's exactly what I did.
That's when things began going downhill. I lost all my data and somewhere in the process the disk geometry has changed. And the drive is not readable. I've been running Testdisk for ages trying to recover the partition, find files, etc all to no avail.

Now I'm trying to 'Rebuild BS' but it's been stuck on this screen for over 24 hours. Any idea what could be wrong?

The partition type is wrong. FAT16 can not be used for such high capacity, so rebuilding the boot sector is useless.
Try to search for a partition using TestDisk, Analyse or use PhotoRec to check if your data can be recovered.

Ok so I've just tried restarting Testdisk and plugging in the hard drive once again.
After selecting "rdisk1" this is the screen I get.

Why does it say the media is write protected?? It would be pointless to proceed from this point on, right?

Should I scan "disk1" instead?

So I'm going ahead with the "Analyse" option and here's what I get.

Should I continue on to "Quick Search" or abort?

Well tried the analyse option, and after 2 days, nothing... Any advice on how to proceed?
