How to extracts .jpg's from .gz files?

#1 Post by m1kush »

I had to factory reset my Android phone (OnePlus 7 Pro if it matters) because I couldn't log into OS and it was the only option, after which I pulled the disk image of /data partition to my computer in hope of recovery. I ran PhotoRec on the disk image and it found a couple of system .xml and .txt files, one .sqlite file and two huge .gz files (2GB and 9GB) with only one extension-less file inside. I am fairly sure that my data (mostly photos) is inside it. How do I go about extracting it?

Any compression software that understands the gz format is sufficient.
But since there is no use in trying to further compress a bunch of highly compressed files like jpg images I doubt that your images were stored that way.

But what else could such a large file be except a bunch of files that weren't properly isolated?

A false positive like the ones from today's belove Covid19-Test.
Disabling too many extension can easily extend other files, like your gz-type file.

But Photorec should stop extending your gz-file once it hits a JPEG fingerprint, assuming that is activated in the Photorec settings.

I also have been trying to extract a .tar.gz file in windows and it should contain a folder. Unfortunately, whenever I do extract it (using 7-zip) it just gives me a file with the name of the folder but...well, as a file, not a folder. Any help greatly appreciated, thanks.
