Nikon D800 file recovery failing

#1 Post by alluran »

Hi, I'm trying to recover some D800 files from an ext4 RAID system (Mistake trying to backup some photos, ironically during the week that my 2nd backup has failed :\)

PhotoRec 6.14 is finding the files, but they're all being truncated it seems (photoshop, etc say unexpected end of file, though the metadata seems intact, as jpeg previews are working)

Is there any way to just expand the size that it's recovering for now, so I can manually trim them later, or can someone tell me how to recover the files manually based on the log file:

/volumeUSB1/usbshare/recup_dir.4/f84527712.jpg 84527712-84527805
File should not be bigger than 104857600, stop adding data
/volumeUSB1/usbshare/recup_dir.4/f84705280.nef 84705280-84796085
/volumeUSB1/usbshare/recup_dir.4/f107293200.jpg 107293200-107293201
File should not be bigger than 104857600, stop adding data
/volumeUSB1/usbshare/recup_dir.4/f107296024.tif 107296024-107479047 (107479048-107479048) 107479049-107500824

The files are quite large, and the file sizes being returned seem very close to what I'd expect.

Can you send me some original photos from your D800 ? I will try to reproduce the truncation problem and find a fix.

Hello CG,

I'm not sure if you ever got D800 files to work with, but I am happy to send them to you.

I accidentally deleted a day's images on a Mac (10.8). There were files from both a D700 and a D800. PhotoRec does as good or better of a job finding those files as any other software, but it seems to corrupt the D800 images. It recovers the D700 images without problem.

Because it recovers the D700 files mixed with the D800 images, I do not think they have been overwritten or corrupted on the computer.

Please reply privately with an e-mail or dropbox preference and I will send a fresh raw NEF file as well as a corrupted file to see if you can help me save them.

Thank you, both for this help and for providing good open-source recover software. I'll be donating soon.

Kevin

Christophe,

You may have misread my last post. I need to recover Nikon D800 NEF files on my hard drive. PhotoRec recovers Nikon D700 NEF files excellently, but corrupts the D800 files right next to them. Perhaps Nikon has a substantial change in format.

I need help.

I am happy to send you both corrupted and uncorrupted files so you can examine them and hopefully offer a suggestion, or add a new fix for future versions. Please let me know how you would like to receive them.

I have been avoiding any new writes as I await a response, which makes life difficult. But I need these files.

I would much rather donate to you than pay for extortion-ware that may or may not work.

Thank you,

Kevin
