Unallocated in WindowsDisk Management but shows in testdisk

#1 Post by torelief »

Lost partition was NTFS created in linux by gparted and formated in windows xp....intel/pc partition

Problem description: Partition was likely damage by partedmagic during a cancelled incorrect operation. Windows sees the partition as unallocated, gparted (linux) sees it as raw drive space with no file system. Nothing new has been written to partition, only testdisk has been run on partition. Neither overlapping partition displayed below contain the files i lost.

Steps so far:
-I ran testdisk ->quick search ->deeper search.
-deeper search results Image
Largest size in sectors (585504990) is the partition with files i need
The first two partitions are boot and windows
I dont know what the other partitions are
-I followed (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step) but this was unsuccessful in allowing me to see file entries when partition was selected by pressing letter P
-Attempted to load backup (L function on deeper search), tried to change partition type to primary and write, then to extended and write. (These changes did not stick)
-partition still reads same start, end points and size in sectors

Pls advise any suggestions appreciated thank you

ps i dont know if it affects recovery but this partition is on same drive as a working windows box, no disk error related issues i know of.

Anyone any ideas? Please reply soon for i need lost data and will have to try a more robust disk recovery tool soon if no one here can suggest further solutions to what i have already done. I did not want to try multiple tools at the same time and risk corrupting any remaining data!! thanyou

If the partition is displayed when you choose Analyse, run instead PhotoRec on this partition.
If needed, enable the expert mode in Options, start a recovery, choose [Whole] and select a 512 byte blocksize,
use the default options otherwise.
