ExFAT external HDD failure and recovery

Apologies upfront if this has been covered elsewhere in the forum or on the wiki, but I couldn't find it. If you could provide a link, fantastic!

My issue: I have a 1.5TB Seagate external HDD that is formatted as exFAT for use by my mac and PC. I had my iTunes library and photo library on the disk. I have a backup of the photo library, but my last backup of iTunes is a year old. :(

The drive suddenly stopped working, not being recognised by either the PC or my MacBook when plugged in. Disk Utility on the mac can see the disk, but fails to repair it. I cannot view the contents of the drive at all.

I can see the disk using testdisk, and a deep analysis will scan the disk.

My issue is, I'm not sure how to proceed. Ideally I would like to be able to recover the contents of my iTunes library and associated media, copying to another disk is fine. I used aidfile recovery but it was only able to recover the files but not retain the filenames. With 30,000 or so files, this wasn't too helpful.

I'm running version 6.14 of testdisk. If you can suggest an approach to take or what further diagnostics to run to recover my files I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks in advance
