Recovery of a CD Pass 1

#1 Post by Zoberist »

I am trying to recover photos and other files from a CD that I made as a backup in 2001. My recovery is in progress. However, I have been on Pass 1 and it has been running for a while. For every reading sector it is telling me "0 files found" and it is telling me "Error reading sector" for that sector. I still have 15 hours for completion. Is it going to recover any files?

Pass 1 - Reading sector - 0 files found

#2 Post by Zoberist »

I am trying to recover files from a cd and they are standard image files. For every sector I am reading I am getting a "Error reading sector" and 0 files found. Is it possible that the whole drive is bad? I burned the cd in 2001. Anything I could be doing wrong here?

Looks like it won't work if all read operation failed...
It may be because you don't have administrator rights or because the cd is too old and its storage data layer is degraded.
In the latter case, you can contact a data recovery company.

You may consider other solutions to read damaged CDs, such as 'readcd' from 'Cdrtools' or 'ddrescue' from 'gddrescue'. See this relevant thread: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... 272#106272.

Might be you can try IsoBuster

http://www.isobuster.com/download.php

It has some free functionality.

Install the download but before launching the programme make sure that your CD or DVD is already in the tray.

If it does not work it is possible that you have a harware problem.
If any of your friends owns a portable CD/DVD reader/writer might be you can borrow it so you can try to extract your files to a HDD.

Best of luck
