Accuracy of timing

I have started a recovery using PhotoRec.
It started saying that the process would take 2-3 days (the disk is about 140gb).
It has now been running for 1 day and is steadily recovering files.
The display is updated every 15 seconds or so with an increase to the elapsed time (15 seconds) and the estimated time to completion is increased by about 90seconds.
The display is now showing 190 hours to finish
To put it another way if it continues like this the program will never finish.

Is there a problem with the program or am I without hope or is there a logical explanation?

More than 24 hours for a 140GB isn't normal, it's less than 2 MB/s.
If there are bad sectors or high fragmentation, the timing will not be accurate. Do you see a read error message ?
