I have checked the gz files you send me, they are probably a file index, maybe created by spotlight...

the first one could well be (it came right after a .apple file), but all the other hundreds of small 512Byte files? or the large 16GB file?

All the 512-bytes gz files contains reference to ".fseventsd/sl-compat". fseventsd is the file services events daemon. It allows apps to register to receive notifications about changes to directory structures.
