installing\Using photorec

Hi,
new to this forum, so excuse me if this is not the place for my question.
downloaded the testdisk\photorec, unzipped it to a folder,but i cant seem to make it run.
tried everything i know, compiling, different commands,running under root (off course) ,nothing happened...(although some of the things are not supposed to work... )
anyway, would appreciate if any of u would in light me how to make the program run.
