Photorec 7.1WIP stops after certain amount of files

I am trying to recove some lost *.psd files from my roomates external HDD, but I'm having a really hard time locating them.
First of all: The HHD itself still works fine. There are just a couple of folders missing, one had very important data (the *.psd files) in it.

I tried with testdisk undelet, but couldn't locate them. Then I tried photorec, and that starts to recover lots and lots of deleted files. Problem is, that after exactly 97 files, photorec starts to amass one huge file. I stopped it when it reached about 45GB earlier. I read that I had to locate the restore destination on a drive bigger than the one I was recovering from, which I did. Still, the issue persists.

Any help, would be REALLY appreciated.

What is the file extension of the 45GB+ file ?
Do you have the problem even if you do not disable file extensions in FileOpts ?

Hello Christoph - First of: Thank you for all the hard work with TestDisk and PhotoRec. Those are the most important pieces of software I have ever found.

To your question: They have the *.psd extension (so a Photoshop file) as I only searched for those.
For the second question: What exactly do you mean? I only searched for the above mentioned extension, and non else.

Please do not disable the other file extensions. I think you will recover your psd files without problems after that.
