Hi,

I re-installed my OS(windows 8 consumer preview)with ubuntu 10.04 but I forgot to backup some family photos. Can anyone advise of the best way to recover these files?

Thanks

I assume only one thread is needed.
The other one is removed.
If there would be any necessity, I can move it back.

Difficult to judge.
Did write into your file system or override it?
At the moment, it's not recommended to write anything to your disk/partition anymore.
Especially if you have had photos, PhotoRec would be a good idea.
Tip for using PhotoRec, go to File Opt and press s to deselect all file types.
Activate only required file types like jpg. etc..
Scan Free space.
So PhotoRec will recover photos only from unallocated or free space.

I'm not sure what you mean by write into or override, sorry. I installed Linux over a Windows partition, so I guess it was re-partitioned and formatted.

I scanned the entire HDD with photorec and it found over 10,000 files, loads of rubbish in there but I managed to find what I think is enough pictures to be content with, not sure if I found them all as I have spent all day sifting through 10,000 files..lol but I thank you for your help.

Photoec wasnt able to recover any files from my MMC though. Some people suggested I scan the MMC 1st as that would be the easiest way but it turned out scanning the HDD was the better option.
