PhotoRec scan for unusual file extensions

I am working to recover files from a lost partition on an ext4 dos disk using PhotoRec.
I wiped a test disk with "1010"s then made it ext4 with a set of sample files. Then deleted the partition and ran PhotoRec.
My testing is only recovering 93 of 228 ASCII files. The files that are not recovering have atypical extensions like ".c,v", ".h,v", ".cache" and others even more creative.
Is this behavior normal and expected?
Is there a way to add some unusual file types to the list or would I need to modify the source and rebuild a custom version?
