open office file not saved correctly

#1 Post by lightfoot500 »

I had a file on my desktop and also a backup of the same file in another folder.
i was saving the file on desktop and also saving the copy of the file to filebackup.
while saving the file and backup file, somehow most of the file was deleted and i am left with 1/5 of what it was.
also, the file was corrupted then and i had to re-open the file with work, and microsoft office,
I have explored openoffice possibilitys for a saved temp file, etc, and didnt find one.

i got a copy of photorec and ran it. it produced many recup_dir.xxx folders. each one having alot of files in it.
i sorted the files by name, looked at those that were rich text .rtf and some where of the lost file.
Great ! but none show any of the part of the file that was lost. several shown the part of the file that i recovered using Word to reopen it.
can i search my hole hard drive for just .rtf extensions. and perhaps find it that way ?
or perhaps just give up and start recreating the file again manually ?
thanks,

Use the file explorer to search for the rtf files containing a word specific to your recent work, this way you will not have to check manually all files.
If you don't find your file, openoffice has probably failed to save the latest version of your work.

thank you,
what seems to be happening is that it is not saving ALL of the document.
for some reason it doesnt get it all saved. which sounds unbelievable.
almost like accidentally i highlighted a bunch of the document and deleted it before saving it.
and then somehow i saved it back onto the backup copy as well.

if that were the case where i deleted a large part of my file with highlight-delete
is there anyway to retrieve that part ,, since it has been a day, i am sure it isnt in the memory of that feature.
where would that deleted part be ?
searching with the file explorer wouldnt find it since it was deleted.
would the photorec be able to search for that ?
what would be the most efficient way to do it using photorec ( settings, etc )
thank you

Use the explorer to search in all the recovered files for your lost text...
