Write to but not read from HDD

#1 Post by habanerocat »

Hi, I have a WD1200BEVS-22RST0 and as the title says, I can write to the drive but not read from it.
It was in a USB case, same story there, so I removed it and it's now connected to my Win7 PC.

During my initial recovery process I accidentally deleted the 88GB of video files, but they are still there.

When I run TestDisk it can see the video files but when I try write them to a different HDD, nothing happens.
My log file isn't formatted nice and tidy like others I've seen on here. Any idea why?

I also tried EaseUS, same story with that.
I've tested the software using a separate USB stick and it recovers files there, no problem.

I'm running PhotoRec at the moment but there is 6000 hours left and rising.....

Any ideas what might be wrong here?

Many thanks for any replies.

There may be bad sectors. Can you try to clone the disk to a new empty disk (be careful to select the correct destination) using ddrescue or create an image file ?
See https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf for details

Thanks for reply.

I tried Clonezilla, it ran well but then found bad sectors and just gave up.
I'll give ddrescue a go and report back.

Thanks again......
