The encryption will prevent data recovery utilities from recovering your data.

Is there no way around this?

Edit: it was password protected (mac journaled), apple partition guid. I think I accidentally formatted it to be under the exact same settings and password. Is there really no way to recover the files? so I can just wipe it and start over for peace of mind that they’re gone forever

A passphrase is used to unlock the symmetric encryption key.
Even if you choose the same passphrase, a new key has been generated and used. It's why PhotoRec has been unable to recover your lost files.

Thank you so much for the information. I’ll keep this in mind for future references when I try and keep my documents encrypted.

However can I get a firm yes or no that I will or will not be able to recover it with this or any kind of data recovery software?
