Hi All,
Situation:
An external 4TB HFS+ HD has been accidentally been formatted.
There is an external 5TB HFS+ HD available/connected to copy the recovered data to.
The source and the format is chosen.
<Terminal/Command Prompt>
2 P Mac HFS 4 199 10 60798 31 49 976645066 [4TB_DeskExtern]
To recover lost files, PhotoRec needs to know the filesystem type where the
file were stored:
[ ext2/ext3 ] ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystem
>[ Other ] FAT/NTFS/HFS+/ReiserFS/... <<------------- chosen
</Terminal/Command Prompt>
After continuing the only destination offered for the recovered data is the home folder of the current user on Mac and the folder were photorec_win.exe is located on Windows.
The offered destinations just don't have enough space to take all the recovered files,
Both hard drives are NOT mounted on Mac and not shown on Windows.
Both drives have the marker "(RO)" - Read Only I presume:
<Command Prompt>
Select a media (use Arrow keys, then press Enter):
>Disk /dev/sda - 1000 GB / 931 GiB (RO) - ST31000528AS
Disk /dev/sdb - 160 GB / 149 GiB (RO) - ST9160301AS
Disk /dev/sdc - 4000 GB / 3726 GiB (RO) - Seagate Expansion Desk <<----------------
Disk /dev/sdd - 5000 GB / 4657 GiB (RO) - WD Elements 107C <<----------------
Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive2 - 4000 GB / 3726 GiB (RO) - Seagate Expansion Desk <<----------------
Disk \\.\PhysicalDrive3 - 5000 GB / 4657 GiB (RO) - WD Elements 107C <<----------------
</Command Prompt>
Specs of the used computers
Mac:
MBP 17" Dual Core i7, 8GB RAM, OS: El Capitan
Windows:
Intel Pentium, 16GB RAM, OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
PhotoRec version: 7.1
How can I get the external 5TB HD to be the destination of the recovery effort?
Thank you for any help.
Cheers
MacSeal

Re: Choose an external HD as recovery destination in PhotoRec 7.1
When asked for the destination press the left arrow key until you get your external drive listed.
If it doesn't work, copy testdisk-7.1-WIP directory to your external disk and run it from there.

Thanks for that - it worked.
REMARK: If PhotoRec is used under OSX/macOS the destination drive has to be mounted before it can be used by PhotoRec.

PS: Recovering is running now for about 5 hours with another 200+ hours to go...
