Hi! I went through a lot of troubleshooting to recover video files from a corrupted microSD card, shot on a Lumix DC-GX850K camera. So I wanted to share my solution in case anyone else was having this problem.
The problem:
I could still view the videos on my camera, but could not read from the microSD card on Windows 10 (card reader, USB connection) or through other devices e.g. plugging the card into an LG phone.
Running PhotoRec recovered the videos, but it generated two separate files for each video: xxx_mdata.mov and yyy.mp4. Unfortunately, the filenames and timestamps of files that should be paired up do match up.
The solution:
1. Pair up the files based on the file size of xxx_mdata.mov and the video length of yyy.mp4.
2. Change the file extension of yyy.mp4 to yyy.mov
3. Follow this solution in the documentation under "Recovering lost videos from a memory card using PhotoRec" : https://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk.pdf
Example:
PhotoRec recovered the following files for me:
f86599168_mdat.mov - 3,569,404 KB
f86622208_mdat.mov, 2,651 KB
f106790912.mp4 - 1,204 KB, Length: 17:58
f86592256.mp4 - 128 KB, Length: 00:01
To recover the largest file, I paired it with the file with the longest length, despite their disparate names.
I renamed f106790912.mp4 to f106790912.mov, then typed the following in command terminal to recover the longer video: type f106790912.mov f86599168_mdat.mov > recoveredVideo.mov
And recoveredVideo.mov plays! Hope this helps and good luck.
