PhotoRec recovered my deleted .wav files, but it's mostly white noise. Help!

#1 Post by leaveeye »

Hello all,
Recently, PhotoRec saved my life when an SD Card containing some recorded audio from a Zoom H6, was formatted prematurely. After a couple of hours photorec found the files and I was happy to see they were around 500mbs each.

The problem though is that when played all that is heard is deafening white noise, but throughout the audio clip there are small moments where the original audio cuts in. After doing some research on how to fix .wav headers, etc, I am at a loss somewhere between information overload and an immense lack of knowledge. Can someone possibly walk me through how to go about repairing these files?

If useful, I originally recorded the audio in mono, 96kHz, with 24 bits per sample.

Thanks in advance,
Levi

The success of Photorec depends on the level of defragmentation of the storage device.
If you are trying to restore stuff on a SD card where you are only recording pictures and videos without ever deleting something you have a high rate of success - assuming you are transferring its content to a computer and after transfering you delete all files on the card.

Operating this way ensures the clusters are used consecutively and recovery is likely.
Defragmentation reduces your chances of recovery.

If you think this fits your case and Photorec fails nevertheless you can ask a professional recovery service if they are able the assemble the cluster puzzle for you.

Do you have both non-deleted and deleted wav files on this SD card ? It can be use to learn if all wav files are created fragmented or not.
