PhotoRec and CR2 Canon Raw

#1 Post by Samfisher »

Hello :)

So I've got a corrupted HDD, and was trying to recover some images. I was a photographer and I have tons of CR2 images on there that I would like to recover. However, in the Wiki CR2 is stated as a compatible image format that could be recovered, but in PhotoRec itself there is no option for CR2, only CRW, which is not the same format. I tried it anyway, along with JPG recovery, and after it's completed only the JPG files were recovered, and not a single .CR2 file.

Any help on this? Using 6.14

I just read it but I'm already using 6.14 32Bit version. I selected CRW and JPG and left it to do it's thing. When it was done, the total recovered files were 40GB, and many of them were duplicated. My total photography folder is 120GB, with both JPG and CR2 files.

There was not a single CR2 file that was recovered.

Any help?

You need to select the TIFF file familly, not crw.

So I restored a majority of my .CR2 files...But.. I only had 100GB of .CR2 files, and I was looking through my folders for duplicates when I ran across this....

Hi Sam

I am also having some problem. When I completed the 6 hour scan on my photo HDD I tried the window search with .cr2 I found not a single file with such name. During the scan, the Opt function is set on tif already which apparently from the wiki includes .cr2 files. What is the method to custom ask PhotoRec to look into that specific extension file?

Hi Fiona. I have used the 32 bit version. I am sure it is the following
http://www.cgsecurity.org/testdisk-6.13.win.zip

EDIT: Oh, I only used the 6.13. I am scared of the BETA. Should I try it?

EDIT2: Princess Fiona - you save my day!! I manage to detect .cr2 with 6.14! One last question, is it possible to have Photorec recover file with the filename in which it was before it was deleted? For example I get filename like
f7357768.cr2. The actual file name was _MG_1185.CR2. Can we ask photorec to recover those file with the original name?

PhotoRec won't recover the filename but tools like exiftool (see after running PhotoRec page) can find the original file number.
Example:

Code: Select all

File Name : IMG_0462.CR2
File Size : 7.7 MB
File Modification Date/Time : 2009:07:07 16:12:57+02:00
File Permissions : rw-rw-r--
File Type : CR2
File Number : 104-0462
See the last line from this extract ?

As PhotoRec recovers the date/time stored by the camera when the picture was taken, usually you only have to sort the files by date.

Photorec can recover Canon raw cr2 files however, you need to change the recovery options from the default.as "broken".

Select in the Options - keep corrupted files as YES, you will find that photorec recovers the Canon raw cr2 files, however, it prefixes them with the letter b (which stands for broken).

Hope this helps.
