Hard drive formatted, lost everything

#1 Post by johnny194 »

Hi! Here's my problem:
My hard drive became a dynamic disk. I tried to convert it back to basic disk with a disk manager program. I clicked apply, my computer rebooted, than blue screen appeared. Now my hard drive is empty, all my files are gone. I have a backup of my files, but my parrtions are also gone.
I have an HP probook 4535s with windows 7 home premium. I had four partitions (than after convertingy hard drive volumes): system, C, HP recovery, HP tools amd also some unallocated space.
Do you know if I can get somehow my partitions back with TestDisk?
Thank you very much for your help!

If you're not able to boot anymore, you can have try to use a LiveCD.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Livecd
Looks like that your partition table is empty or not available?
A LiveCD doesn't create a log, so you can use a camera and low resolution photos to upload them.
I would need infos from Analyse (current partition structur) and Quick Search.
If partitions are not found, use Deeper Search.
If TestDisk finds your partitions, please check them and press p to list your files.

It found the partitions, although other programs couldn't. I can also see my files.
How can I restore them?

If TestDisk finds more partitions, it might be possible that they overlap.
For example, two partitions cannot use the same space.
That's why you must decide which of them you want to recover.
In some cases, partitions created under Vista/win7 are aligned on megabyte boundary.
So it could be possible that they appear as deleted also.
Using the left or right arrow key on your keyboard, you can set them up to primary or logical partitions, like your previous situation and recover them using write.
Before you recover a partition, data should be listed correctly.

I think that program deleted them. So I change them with the arrows, and then hit enter?

Would it be possible to upload a screen and let me know which partitions contain your data?
So I'd be able to write you some instructions.

Sure, when I get home, I'll do it.
I checked it, and I can only make one bootable partition. So my hard drive is still a dynamic disk, right?
I was wondering if I could do this. One of my partitions was HP Recovery, which restores my hard drive to the state I bought it. It had the operation system on it, along with the drivers. I would like to restore fully this partition, and use it, so it might be able to convert my hard drive to a basic disk l, and recover my partitions. I have my data backed up so that's not a problem. Is it possible?

Dynamic disks have no partition table.
Partition table is used as a dummy so that no OS is trying to use it.
At the end of your disk there are infos about your partitions.

TesDisk does the following to convert it back;
TestDisk recognizes your partitions and write an intel-partition table including your partitions.
After restart, your disk is recognized as basic disk like before.

A HDD can only have one active partition to boot from.
It must be primary.
You can do this in TestDisk using your arrow keys and set it * (star) for primary active.
This partition must contain your start files.
