Advice?

#1 Post by rich2381 »

My hard drive died recently and had stupidly not backed it up. Plugged into windows and just kept telling me to format (I didn't do that). It said it would try to repair it so i let it do that. No avail though and whenever I click the drive it just says "F:/ is not accessible access is denied". Tried test disk undelete but no luck so now trying Photorec.

The drive is 750Gb USB hard drive formatted to NTFS. It contains: photos, music (cd rips and itunes), videos (dvd rips and holiday videos) and documents.

Ideally I'd like to recover everything but priority are definitely photos and holiday videos and to some extent the documents. I'm running windows 7.

I've started photorec and it has been going for 2.5 hours. SO far it has found over 150,000 files and it still says it has another 45 hours to run! I am copying them to another 2TB hard drive and I'm worried that if it keeps going at this rate I'll run out of space. I've looked at the files and a lot seem to be duplicated.
Any advice on what I can do?

Thanks in advance

Have you try TestDisk, Advanced, Boot, List ?

Choose the 2 TB disk as destination when running PhotoRec instead of moving the files.

When I try testdisk list it says "can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged.

When I click boot it says: boot sector status: OK, backup boot sector status: OK. Sectors are identical.

Sorry when I said copying I meant that I had set the 2TB drive as the destination.

I am not sure how to proceed. Any advice?

Try other data recovery utilities, they may be able to list the filenames.
If it's not the case, wait for PhotoRec to finish...
