seems too small

#1 Post by racci »

Hi ppls.... in advance I thank you for any help you can give me...

I had a failure on SUSE server with raid 0.... I did a rebuild and then all partitions were gone... now I'm trying to get data back from it and in a quick scan I see all 3 partitions but the partition on which are the most important data gives me an error: the hard disk seems too small
ext3 blocksize=4096 large file sparse superblock, 57GB/53GiB....

can anyone help anyhow... last time they did backup was 2y ago... is there any help

Can you run a diagnose and copy and paste the content of your testdisk.log into your next post?

Disk /dev/sda - 79 GB / 74 GiB - LSI MegaIDE #00
The harddisk (79 GB / 74 GiB) seems too small! (< 80 GB / 74 GiB)
The following partition can't be recovered:
Linux 2742 0 1 9728 254 60 112246152
Your disk or array size looks somehow unusual?
Probably disk size should be 80 GB and is 79 GB?
Currently, I've no idea why?
Sometimes I'm using a trick to increase disk capacity virtually, so that your partition will be displayed and if it lists data, you can copy them off of your RAID/Disk?
Example:
http://forum.cgsecurity.org/phpBB3/post ... icky#p3435

Please have a try to increase your disk size virtually and run another diagnose to have a try to list your data.
Note: It's intended as a diagnose only.
Don't confirm at Write or modify something.

In testdisk, before you confirm at Analyse, go to geometry and change the value at Cylinder from 9717 to 9729.
Leave all the other options alone and quit the menu geometry at Ok
Run another Analyse and Quick Search.
If your partition ist listed, please mark it and press p to have a try to list your files.
In case, you should copy them to another healthy disk.

Please let me know, have you been able to list your files?

I assume that Deeper Search wouldn't be as much helpful either?
Searching partitions on the virtual area can cause read errors.
Did you recreate your RAID?
Are you sure that your RAID fits exactly like before?
Might be possible that there is a problem with your size?
Before your partition was ending exactly at 80 GB and now your disk has less than 80 GB.
The harddisk (79 GB / 74 GiB) seems too small! (< 80 GB / 74 GiB)
Some MB are not available anymore.
If it doesn't fit exactly, it can cause such problems.
