partition read error (test disk)

#1 Post by yasir »

guys i need help, i have a hard disk 500 gb. hard disk has crc error. and also have bad sectors. lost partition but raw unallocated shown but when i try to recover partition using test disk it says partition read error no recovery or cloning or imaging tool is able to read from hard disk. hard disk is inaccessible due to crc error. the only thing is working is repairing bad sectors tools and scanning tools for bad sectors. but i want to recover data from it. and repairing bad sector is taking way too long. i have many questions in mind but have no clue.
problems
1. testdisk do detect raw partition but fail to read from it. hard disk has 3 ntfss partition but suddenly turn raw. and now showing unallocated raw. also show crc error when trying to access.

what can i do to recover data from hard disk having crc error that making every software fail to read from it? i have tested over 50 best software for recovery. but fail to read.

help help help

If your whole disk appears as unallocated or RAW, it might be possible that your disk is defect?
Please check your disk using crystal disk info.
http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html
The portable version is recommended, because the installer (exe) contains adware Open Candy.
Also check the recognized size of your disk.

Hello All-

I have a similar problem. I have a 500GB HDD that TestDisk can't read from it and reports "Read Error". The Disk we are trying to repair is a WD Scorpio 500GB 2.5" Disk (Model # WD5000BEVT-75ZAT0) that started to fail under windows 7. It still powers up and spins. What is strange is that the OS thinks it is a 2GB drive, not a 500 GB one.

Since the disk is reporting the wrong size, is there a way to manually enter the disk parameters and have that re-written back to the disk so that it shows the correct size, and thereby enable it to be properly read and rescue files? But I'm not sure how to read all of that or what values to enter.

I checked the hardware using Fiona's suggestion for Crystal Disk, but it came back as "health Status = Good", in addition, that software saw the disc as a 1GB volume rather than the 500GB volume that it is. (TestDisk sees it as a 2GB HDD, as does the OS) But we know this HDD has previous issues as when it crashed it made a clicking sound. (but it doesn't do that anymore)

See below for log files.

I would really appreciate any help and hints for the next step to take.

Thanks ;-)

It shouldn't be done as long as you don't know the reason, why your disk size is not recognized correctly.
LBA (Logical Block Addressing) could be affected too?
Did you already check your disk at another PC?
Wrong recognition of the disk size can cause such error messages like partition read error.
Did you already test your disk using the diagnostic tool of your disk manufacturer?
Some tools already offer an opportunity to set capacity back.
Could be something like setMAX?
Also check for an update of your firmware.
Maybe HDD Capacity Restore Tool could help?
http://hddguru.com/software/2007.07.20- ... tore-Tool/
But it's not as effective as hdat2 and SetMax or remove HPA (host protected area)?
http://hdat2.com/
Use these tools on your own risk.

Hello Fiona-

Thanks for the suggestions. I did test using another PC, and the OS was able to "see" the HDD OK, and didn't show any error, just the capacity is wrong. I'm worried it might be hardware related, and will try some additional hardware testing as you suggested, and try some of that software as well.

I'll post results later on when they are complete.

Again, thanks for the rapid reply!

I've had an old topic here about hdat2.

It's only intended to provide some basic information.
