Filesystem seems damaged

#1 Post by Damien »

Hello,

I have an external HDD WD My Passport 1 To. Since recently, I am getting "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I connect it and can't access the data. So here what I did:

Select the PhysicalDrive (Not the Drive E:), Partition type: Intel, Advanced, Boot and i get:

Boot sector: OK
Backup boot sector: OK

But: "A valid NTFS Boot sector must be present"...

So I go forward with Rebuild BS, after a few hours, I end up with the same screen: both boot sector and backup BS are OK...

I try the List and get "Can't open filesystem. Filesystem seems damaged."

I don't really know what to try where to go now...

Could anyone help?

Thanks,

Damien

Run "cmd" (Right click "Run As Administrator") and "chkdsk /f d:" (replace d: by the correct drive letter).
What is the result ?

If it doesn't work, you can use PhotoRec on this partition to recover your data but it won't recover the original filenames.

Thanks for the answer.

I have heard that "chkdsk /f" can cause data lose... What's the risk?

Does anyone have had a bad experience with the "chkdsk /f" command?

Here is what I get:

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.

What can I do now?

Data loss from any storage devices is an inevitable process, however there are probable solutions for recovering data from situations like damaged partitions, file system corruption, deletion of partitions and many other disastrous situations.

The reasons behind recovery of data from these kind of situations is because, the data which is lost from the drive or storage device will not permanently lost from the device until it is overwritten with other data. Thus this paves the way for recovery of data. To know more for the solution refer the following link: url]http://www.rawpartitionrecovery.com/damaged.html[/url]
