What I found

#1 Post by akinbacon »

Hello,
I have a 500g WD external hard drive that went RAW. I ran Testdisk and this is what I found:

TestDisk 6.14, Data Recovery Utility, July 2013
Christophe GRENIER <grenier@cgsecurity.org>
http://www.cgsecurity.org

Disk /dev/sdb - 500 GB / 465 GiB - CHS 7600 255 63
Current partition structure:
Partition Start End Size in sectors

Invalid FAT boot sector
1 * FAT16 >32M 0 4 5 7600 33 49 122095872
1 * FAT16 >32M 0 4 5 7600 33 49 122095872

I terrified of writing anything to the disk. Can anyone decipher what this means?

Looks like your partition in your partition table is not correct.
Normally the size of a FAT16-partition is 2 GB.
In your case, running Quick Search and if nothing would be found running Deeper Search also can help.
Please copy and paste the conent of your testdisk.log again.
As long as you don't use the menu Write, nothing will be changed.
It's exactly what I prefer, because it's intended as a diagnose only.
If partitions are found, please mark them and press p to have a try to list your files.
