Hello st2000dm001 file system problem

#1 Post by topacid »

I have an external USB drive. 2T , st2000dm001 seagate.Something happened, on usb it stopped working so i unplugged and connected it to my pc. Windows sees it but asnot formatted .I tried recovering it with testdisk and itshows all the files i have there they are okay, the sole problem is that after pressing WRITE , after i restart nothing happens. One problem is that the geometry is different , 240 instead of 255. Should i change it? The patition is NTFS formatted . What am i doing wrong? If i change the geometry do i risk losingmy data?

Thank you

One more thing, the files are intact, i recovered data and all seems to be working except the boot sector or something.

Can you run testdisk / Advanced / Boot and upload a snapshot?

It seems to be a boot problem during a power failure, sorry for uploading on partition. The above image confirms this but i am not sure how to proceed. the data is intact and i don t want to risk damaging.

Looks like that your file system is probably faulty?
I've often seen it in conjunction when the backup of the boot sector is bad.
Currently I recommend to copy your data first to another intact disk or partition.
Have you been able to list your files using the menu Advanced / Boot / List?
At the bottom of the testdisk display you'll find all the commands.
If you select these 2 dots on the upper area of your testdisk display, you'll get ech time one directory up til you get to your disk selection.
It's in case if you'd like to use another direction than your testdisk folder.
You can enter a folder using the right arrow key on your keyboard

After backing up all your needed files you can have a try to repair your file system running chkdsk Driveletter: /r .
You should open your command prompt with administrator privileges to run chkdsk.
