Data recovery from transcend 320GB (storejet 24 mobile).

#1 Post by Ironmaniac »

Hello Forum
I have an external HDD, with two partitions. The problem is I can not access the data. But the data is important. Please advise how to use testdisk on linux to retrieve the data.

There are bad sectors. You should clone the disk to a new empty one using gnu ddrescue.
An old tutorial can be found at http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Damaged_Hard_Disk
Once it's done, remove the original disk and try to recover your data from the clone.

Mr Grenier

Thank you for your insight.
I am not experienced in using command line linux.
The situation is like
Select a media (use Arrow keys, then press Enter):
Disk /dev/sda - 160 GB / 149 GiB - Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00
Disk /dev/sdb - 1000 GB / 931 GiB - WD My Passport 0820
Disk /dev/sdc - 320 GB / 298 GiB - StoreJet Transcend
The Storejet Transcend 320GB has bad sectors, which is needed to be cloned into WD Passport.
Now moving to http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/Damaged_ ... _rescue.27 and looking into the instructions to use dd rescue,

# download ddrescue
wget http://download.savannah.gnu.org/releas ... .8.tar.bz2
# extract the source code
tar xjf ddrescue-1.8.tar.bz2
# compile ddrescue
cd ddrescue-1.8

./configure && make
# first, grab most of the error-free areas in a hurry:
./ddrescue -n /dev/old_disk /dev/new_disk rescued.log
# then try to recover as much of the dicy areas as possible:
./ddrescue -r 1 /dev/old_disk /dev/new_disk rescued.log

I could understand and reach the end of the green part of the commands. But not the red part. Please guide me mentioning how to type the commands with the Transcend storejet being cloned into the WD My Passport.

Thank you
